4 UNEXPECTED CULINARY DESTINATIONS IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES

By Jason Jourdan

Hidden behind the uproar of college football games, unique classroom opportunities, and outstanding internships, some communities in the western United States should also be known for their emerging culinary scenes.

You want the most value out of your trip to the western United States. While you might want to sign up for some great travel insurance services, you’ll also want to get the biggest bang for your buck when spending on food out there.

You will definitely want to consider checking out the cuisine in these college communities. Here are our top choices for great food.

Flagstaff, Arizona

While Flagstaff may be better known for its beautiful scenery than its food, you will definitely want to consider dining when you are attending events at Northern Arizona University.

In fact, you can stay right on the north campus to find a terrific meal at 1899 Bar and Grill where the steak and baby back ribs are well-known by locals. Otherwise, head straight to Mama Burger where they serve fries right on the burger.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City’s array of college cafes and diners makes an impression on almost everyone who considers going to school at the University of Utah, Westminster College, or another school in this western city. City favorite Ruth’s Diner boasts a classic atmosphere with delicious biscuits. In fact, the biscuits are so good that this location has sold more than three million.

The city is also home to Big Ed, where you will not want to miss the big plate of fried hash browns topped with chili, cheese, and onions. An emerging brewing culture also makes this city a must-try.

Corvallis, Oregon

If you are going to be attending the University of Oregon in Corvallis or are planning a visit to campus, then you can find many rare dining treats.

The top of every visitor’s list should be Roxy Dawgs where you can find scrumptious doughnuts early in the day and hot dogs with a variety of savory toppings later in the day. You will also want to consider Togo’s, offering hot pastrami sandwiches that will keep you satisfied all day long.

Fort Collins, Colorado

If you choose to attend the University of Colorado at Fort Collins, then head straight to the Rainbow Restaurant, featuring a unique rainbow burger that will impress any burger lover. The homemade jams from Lucile’s Restaurant make for a sweet addition to any campus visit.

Wherever you choose to attend school, there is undoubtedly a great restaurant located nearby to make finals week a little more bearable. Expand your palate, or treat your friends and family to these local favorites!
